Cellulite Treatment/ Body Firming

What is cellulite treatment?

Cellulite is a collection of fat that pushes against the connective tissues located under the skin giving it that dreaded “orange peel” or “cottage cheese” feel and look.  It is most commonly found on the buttocks, stomach and thighs.  Women are mostly affected, especially those over 35.

Hormonal changes, certain anomalies, a sedentary lifestyle, excess consumption of saturated fats and sugary food as well as poor hydration are direct causes of cellulite.  Poor blood circulation and lymphatic flow as well as poor skin elasticity also affect the development of this condition.

Who is eligible?

Cellulite affects all adult women, slim or obese although doctors have seen cases in adolescents and children. These categories of people are eligible to undergo cellulite treatment.

What does the procedure entail?

There are several optional procedures to treat cellulite, but none are overnight solutions.  Depending on the grade and severity of the condition the treatment may vary from creams to mesotherapy, massaging machines, ultrasound fat destruction, lasers, and liposuction. Other treatments include heat, water, saunas and steam baths, all of which improve blood circulation.

The less expensive and most common treatments are based on anti-cellulite products that act locally on the affected area.  Creams that have a blend of herbs, such as gingko, terminalia, aloe and hoodia, are well known for their anti-obesity/ anti-cellulite effect.  Mesotherapy uses special chemicals that are injected into the area to break down the fat molecules and smooth out the affected area. A massaging machine, on the other hand, rolls over the affected areas, gently sucks out the fat molecules, and improves the lymphatic drainage,   therefore enhancing blood circulation and removing toxins.

Laser-based treatment has a three-fold functionality:

  • breaking up fat molecules and collagen;
  • generating new collagen and;
  • cooling the area to prevent bruising and swelling.

Liposuction is a treatment method that effectively breaks through the layers of fat.

Usually any or a combination of those modalities are used to improve and speed results.

Furthermore, physical activity such as aerobics and certain strength training, a strict diet and giving up a sedentary lifestyle help considerably in reducing fat and cellulite from the body.
